The Q For Everyone | Schriver-Richard Leads the Way in Cape Breton
There are many important lessons to be learned from the path Courtney Schriver-Richard has taken to reach her current position as General Manager of Business Operations for the Cape Breton Eagles. Arguably the most critical of these lessons has been to keep moving forward.
Before she became a champion in the boardroom, Schriver-Richard had already established herself as a very gifted athlete. Frequently playing with and against boys’ hockey teams growing up in Halifax, she made her way first to Ontario, then back to the Maritimes and eventually Saint Mary’s University. After being named CIS (now USports) league MVP for the Huskies on the ice, Schriver-Richard would eventually make her way to Dalhousie University, earning her Master of Business Administration.
From there, it was a wildly successful foray with a company that is synonymous with hockey in this country: Tim Horton’s. Her time with Canada’s coffee king was, ironically, even more successful thanks to pre-existing connections with many of the same people she had already been acquainted with thanks to her time in the rink.
Then, after a high-level stint in the marketing department of Boston Pizza, an opportunity in her home province appeared before Schriver-Richard to combine her love of career with a love for the game. With that, she assumed her current position with the Eagles in the spring of 2019.
If she’s had her detractors, Schriver-Richard has paid them no attention. Even a brief conversation with her reveals a determination to not only push forward with the tasks before her, but to encourage other women to continue breaking down the numerous barriers that are, sadly, still frequently encountered both within the game of hockey and outside it. This, combined with an infectious personality and obvious natural leadership capabilities, leave the Eagles in exceptionally good hands.
When not spearheading any number of initiatives that continue to ingrain the Eagles into the fabric of the Cape Breton hockey landscape, Schriver-Richard can be found championing the cause of women throughout all sports and doing her best to come to terms with being a “goalie mom” to her son, eight-year-old Nash.
With a formidable track record and “no bad days” attitude as a guiding principle, it’s obvious that Courtney Schriver-Richard will ensure that Nash, the Eagles and women throughout the game in general will find the sports world in a better place than when she entered it.
After all, moving forward is the only direction she knows.
