QMJHL announces 2022 Dr. Sylvain Simard Award winners
Moncton Wildcats goaltender Vincent Filion (Gold Award), Cape Breton Eagles defenseman Brayden Schmitt (Silver Award) and Baie-Comeau Drakkar centerman Marc-Antoine Séguin (Bronze Award) are the 2022 Dr. Sylvain Simard Award recipients.
Created in December of 2019, the “Dr. Sylvain Simard Award” is named in honour of the former player and current doctor of the Chicoutimi Saguenéens, Sylvain Simard. Through the QMJHL Foundation, Dr. Simard supports three students involved in applied science classes such as mathematics, chemistry, biology and physics.
The grants are awarded as follows:
- Gold Award: $2,500
- Silver Award: $1,500
- Bronze Award: $1,000
Vincent Filion finished his Grade 12 last year at Bernice MacNaughton High School. He took five science classes in which he maintained an average of 94%. He earned those results despite not studying in his mother tongue. The Wildcats goaltender is pursuing his studies at Moncton University in mathematics and chemistry.
Brayden Schmitt was enrolled with Northern Pre-University Grade 12 where he took four science classes (chemistry, biology, advanced functions & calculus vectors) and maintained stunning grades while playing for the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada. He is pursuing his educational path at Athabasca University in Management and French.
Marc-Antoine Séguin studied in Applied Sciences at Cégep de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue and Cégep de Chicoutimi. Despite a trade from Rouyn-Noranda to Chicoutimi, he managed to maintain outstanding results in his science classes, including integral calculus, chemistry, physics, as well as probabilities and stats.
