Tokarski stands on his head in Chiefs win
KITCHENER, Sunday, May 18, 2008 Dustin Tokarski out dueled Josh Unice, making 36 saves in a goaltending gem to help the Spokane Chiefs win it 2-1 over the Kitchener Rangers and remain undefeated at the 2008 MasterCard Memorial Cup Tournament.
Matt Halischuk opened the scoring with an unassisted shorthanded goal, his second of the tournament, at 4:21 in the first period. He beat goaltender Dustin Tokarski five-hole on a breakaway opportunity following a turnover in the neutral zone. The Chiefs tied it up with just over three minutes remaining thanks to Justin Falk, who scored on a floating wrist-shot from the blue-line. It beat a surprised Josh Unice, who was screened on the shot.
Drayson Bowman would score the eventual game-winner by burying his fourth marker of tournament with just over five minutes played in the second frame.
"I played a lot of big games this year and the experience I got from those really helped me out tonight," said Tokarski, the game’s first star. "I got used to the barn after the first game and I felt much more comfortable in goal. A lot of the credit has to go to our defensemen. They blocked a tone of shots."
Game four of the 2008 MasterCard Memorial Cup Tournament goes Sunday between the Belleville Bulls and the Gatineau Olympiques starting at 7:00 pm (ET) on Rogers Sportsnet and RIS.
