Islanders rally for 4-1 win over Gatineau
David Henley scored the game winning goal and Filip Chlapik added a pair of goals as the Charlottetown Islanders begun its three-in-three road trip with a 4-1 win over the Gatineau Olympiques Friday night.
The Islanders snap a three-game losing streak and are now 9-10-1-1 on the season. Gatineau falls to 10-8-0-4 on the season.
Chlapik scored back-to-back late third period goals to secure the win for the Islanders. Charlottetown, who trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes, rallied back with four unanswered goals with one late in the second period and three in the final frame.
Vaclav Karabacek opened the scoring for Gatineau at the 12:02 mark of the first period with his fifth goal of the season. Alexandre Carrier drew the lone assist. Shots were 12-10 Gatineau.
In the second period, Charlottetown dominated the majority of the period and were finally rewarded at 18:37 with a short-handed goal from Keith Getson. The goal was Getson’s first career QMJHL goal and Filip Rydstrom drew the lone assist. Islanders outshot Gatineau 16-5.
Henley gave Charlottetown a 2-1 lead at 9:02 into the third period with his first goal of the season. Bradley Kennedy and Chlapik drew assists.
The Islanders took a two-goal lead with Chlapik’s eighth goal of the season at 15:34. Sprong drew the lone assist. Moments later on the power play at 18:37, Chlapik added his second of the game and ninth of the campaign for a 4-1 Islanders lead. Dexter Weber and Sprong drew assists. Shots were 9-7 Islanders.
Mason McDonald made 23 saves in the win for Charlottetown as Brandon Whitney, making his Olympiques debut, made 31 saves in the loss.
The Islanders visit the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada tomorrow evening for a 5 p.m. puck drop.
