Breault and Allen win TELUS player of the week awards
BOUCHERVILLE, Monday, March 3, 2008 Baie-Comeau Drakkar centre Benjamin Breault and St. John’s Fog Devils goaltender Jake Allen today were named the TELUS offensive and defensive players of the week for the period extending from February 25 to March 2.
In three contests, Breault scored six goals, including a shorthanded marker, and added three helpers while registering a +6 rating. He helped the Drakkar collect six points in the standings with wins over the Cataractes, the Voltigeurs and the Saguenéens. Moreover, Breault was named the first star of each contest. He played arguably his best game of the week last Wednesday as he collected four points in an 8-3 decision over Shawinigan. This week, he joined teammates Matt Marquardt and François Bouchard as the third member of the 30-goal plateau.
Angelo Esposito (3-7-10) of Quebec, Francis Paré (6-1-7) of Chicoutimi and Mathieu Perreault (2-6-8) of Acadie-Bathrust were also considered.
The defensive player of the week award goes to Fog Devils backstop Jake Allen. In two games, he helped St. John’s collect three points in the standings thanks to a shutout win and a shootout loss. He maintained a 1.44 goals-against-average and .963 save percentage while facing an average of 39 shots per game. The 17-year-old netminder, who is eligible for the 2008 NHL entry draft, has the third-best save percentage (.900) among League rookies.
Pierre Bergeron (1-4-5; +3) of Quebec, Ryan Mior (3-0; 1 SO; 177 MIN; 1.01 GAA; .953 SAV %) of Gatineau and Raffaele D’Orso (1-2; 190 MIN; 2.21 GAA; .940 SAV %) of Val-d’Or were also considered.
