The Kelowna Rockets kick off a five game road trip Friday in Red Deer, playing the Rebels to begin the final stretch of games before the Western Hockey League Christmas break.
With the approaching World Junior Hockey Tournament the Rockets are without head coach Ryan Huska on this trip.
Huska, an assistant coach on Team Canada’s World Junior team, left Friday morning to meet up with the rest of the Hockey Canada staff in advance of the start of the Canadian pre tournament selection camp.
Assistant coaches Dan Lambert and Ryan Cuthbert are at the helm with the team.
“I think as hard as it is you have to leave Kelowna behind and focus your attention on what’s happening at the World Junior,” said Huska of watching his troops leave on the team bus without him Wednesday night. “I feel really comfortable with Dan and Ryan running things when I’m gone. It allows me not to worry so much as to what is happening here.”
Defenceman Tyson Barrie will play Friday night in Red Deer before flying to the Team Canada selection camp which begins on Saturday with the arrival of the players.
Forward Mitchell Callahan will be with the team a bit longer as the USA Hockey selection camp doesn’t begin until Dec. 16. Callahan is expected to play through the game against Lethbridge on Dec. 15 before heading to the USA tryout.
