Underway: Rockets Hosting Swift Current
By Kevin Parnell
The Swift Current Broncos scored three straight goals in the third period to defeat the Kelowna Rockets 4-1 Wednesday night at Prospera Place in Kelowna.
Cody Eakin had a goal and an assist – all in the third – as the Broncos broke open a close game in the third period.
Trailing 1-0 after two periods of play, Kelowna’s Cody Chikie put a jolt of energy through Prospera Place when he wired a hard wrist shot past Broncos goalies Mark Friesen to tie the game at 1-1 just 4:33 into the third period.
But any momentum the Rockets were hoping to gather was stifled just 26 seconds later when Eakin took over, scoring into the top corner to restore the Broncos one goal lead. Eakin then set-up Jordan Peddle and Dillon Wagner as the Broncos put the game away.
The Rockets came out strong in the first half of the game but couldn’t beat Friesen, who was sharp in the Broncos net. Kelowna outshot Swift Current 10-5 in the first period and 23-15 through two but couldn’t get on the board.
The Broncos opened the scoring in the first period after some sustained pressure in the Rockets end of the ice. Kilian Hutt did the damage at 7:32 of the first period when he converted in close, pushing home a loose puck behind Kelowna starter Adam Brown.
Another sold out crowd at Prospera bid farewell to the Rockets until after Christmas as the team departed after the game for a five game road trip that begins Friday night in Red Deer.
