Game Recap: Oshawa 1, Flint 4
The Oshawa Generals dominated possession Friday night, and it showed in the shot totals, outshooting the Flint Firebirds 41-19. Flint received great goaltending from the duo of Brent Moran and Brendan Johnston, which helped them to the 4-1 win. Nicholas Caamano led the way for the Firebirds with two goals in the game. Connor Chatham also had a two-point night in the victory.
1st Period
The Oshawa Generals dominated possession early in the game, allowing only one shot through the first six minutes. Flint would capitalize on a Generals turnover around the seven-minute mark as Caamano would gather the puck and fire it over the shoulder of Logan Gauthier for his 12th goal of the season.
Firebirds starting goaltender Moran would be forced to exit the game after reaching for a loose puck and tweaking his arm. Johnston would come on in relief, making his second appearance of the season, but Moran would return a few minutes later.
Generals’ defenseman Jacob Graves would pick up the first penalty of the game after giving a crosscheck to Ryan Moore in the defensive zone. Gauthier would stand tall in net, making some great saves on the penalty kill to take the Generals into the intermission down by one.
2nd Period
After a strong performance in the first period, Moran would stay out after the intermission and Johnston would re-enter the net for Flint. Both teams would trade scoring chances early in the second frame, but neither team would surrender a goal in the first half.
The line of Kenny Heuther, Domenic Commisso, and Michael Dal Colle were buzzing throughout the period, but Johnston denied the trio on multiple occasions to keep the Firebirds in the lead. Oshawa would head into the break outshooting Flint 30-10.
3rd Period
Oshawa would head to their first power play early in the third period after Moore took a holding penalty. The Generals could not find the net, but gained momentum after some great scoring chances from Mitchell Vande Sompel. A few minutes after the penalty, the Generals would head back to the power play after Alex Di Carlo was penalized. Oshawa would once again create plenty of scoring chances, but could not beat Johnston.
The Firebirds would get their opportunity with the man advantage as Dal Colle would take a hooking penalty in the offensive end just past the halfway point of the third. The Generals would tighten up defensively and kill their second penalty of the game.
Shortly after the power play, Flint would gain possession in the Generals zone, and Chatham would bury a loose puck near the crease and give the Firebirds the 2-0 lead. The goal was Chatham’s ninth of the season.
Oshawa would finally beat Johnston as Commisso tipped a Daniel Robertson shot from the point. The goal was Commisso’s tenth of the season. Caamano and Will Bitten would find the empty net to give Flint a 4-1 lead. The Generals would pressure the Firebirds more in the last minute of the game, but could not find the back of net.
The Generals will look to bounce back Sunday night versus the Sudbury Wolves.
