GAME RECAP – GENS (6) – BULLDOGS (2)
Friday, November 23rd, 2018: Oshawa Generals vs. Hamilton Bulldogs
The Oshawa Generals took to the ice at the Tribute Communities Centre for their first home game of the weekend against the Hamilton Bulldogs. The Gens entered the game with a 14-7-2-0 record after a big shootout win on the road against the Ottawa 67’s on Wednesday. Coming back to town with four straight wins, the Gens looked to extend their streak with a 2-point performance at home.
1st Period:
The Generals came out of the gate with some jump, generating offensive zone time and early pressure on the Bulldogs in their opening shifts. After their quick start, Oshawa took the first penalty of the game but kept Hamilton off the board with a strong penalty kill. However, shortly after the penalty expired, the Bulldogs opened the scoring with a wrist shot that beat Gens goalie Kyle Keyser. After going down, the Gens fought right back by adding a tally of their own just a minute later. The goal came off a nice pass from Danil Antropov to Allan McShane, who waited out a sprawling Bulldogs goaltender to flip the puck in and tie the game at 1-1. Just before the halfway point of the period, Hamilton took an interference penalty to give Oshawa their first powerplay of the game. Serron Noel had the best chance on the opportunity, taking a rush and breaking in alone on the Bulldogs net before being stopped by Hamilton’s goaltender. After going unsuccessful on the first attempt, the Gens got another try on the PP after a Bulldogs penalty. While they didn’t score on the powerplay, just after the penalty expired Cole Resnick passed the puck back to the point where Mitchell Brewer took a rocket shot that beat the Bulldogs to give Oshawa the lead. After the goal, the Gens took a penalty of their own but killed it off before the end of the period to head into the intermission up 2-1.
2nd Period:
The Bulldogs took a high-sticking penalty right off the period’s opening faceoff to give the Gens a man advantage. Oshawa got a few chances on the attempt, but the Bulldogs managed to hold them off. After the penalty, the Gens added to their lead with Serron Noel passing the puck in front of the net to Nando Eggenberger who potted his twelfth goal of the season. Halfway through the second, the Gens got another crack at the powerplay off another Bulldogs high-sticking call. On the man advantage, the Bulldogs were able to break free for a shorthanded breakaway, but Kyle Keyser came up with a huge save to deny the chance. Going back the other way, Oshawa was finally able to capitalize on the powerplay with a bomb from the point by Nico Gross, extending their lead to 4-1. After the goal, the Gens continued their momentum with a strong penalty killing effort to hold their commanding lead. With one last unsuccessful powerplay attempt to end the period, the Gens carried their 3-goal lead into the third period.
3rd Period:
Both teams had some jump to start the third, taking the play back and forth between ends and generating chances. The Bulldogs were able to strike just before the halfway point of the period, shooting in a loose puck off a scramble in front of the Gens net. Oshawa followed up Hamilton’s goal with a strong shift that resulted in a high-danger chance from Ty Tullio that just missed the net. With just under four minutes left in the period, the Bulldogs got called for crosschecking to put the Gens up a man. On the advantage, Jack Studnicka connected with Serron Noel in the slot who ripped a perfect shot past the Bulldogs to restore Oshawa’s 3-goal lead. However, the Gens hot offense wasn’t done there, as Danil Antropov snuck in behind Hamilton’s defense and potted a loose puck off a Bulldogs turnover. With the late goal from Antropov, the Gens came away with a huge 6-2 win over their division rivals.
With another big win to extend their winning streak to five straight games, the Gens will go on to finish off the weekend against the Sarnia Sting at home on Sunday.
