Silvertips’ Fonteyne named WHL Player of the Month
Calgary, Alta. – The Western Hockey League announced today that Everett Silvertips forward Matt Fonteyne has been named the WHL Player of the Month for January 2018.
Fonteyne, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound overage forward from Wetaskiwin, Alta., registered 25 points (12G-13A) in 13 games as the Silvertips went 9-3-0-1 in the month of January, helping the Silvertips charge into the U.S. Division lead and second place in the WHL’s Western Conference.
His productive month included four multi-goal games as a part of nine straight multi-point efforts. Fonteyne recorded a career-high five assists in a win against the Tri-City Americans that also tied a Silvertips franchise record. The offensive month powered Fonteyne up the WHL scoring race, placing him in a tie for 14th among all WHL players with 67 points (30G-37A) in 52 games, including 14 power play goals and four game-winning goals.
Fonteyne was recognized by the WHL on several occasions throughout the month, capturing WHL On the Run Player of the Week honours once. He was also recognized as the first star of the game on four separate occasions, also picking up two second star of the game honours. He was also named as the WHL’s first star of the night once and picked up second star of the night honours once as well.
Since being drafted by the Silvertips in the third round, 66th overall, in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft, Fonteyne has appeared in 320 WHL regular season games with the Silvertips, recording 188 points (77G-111A), including 27 power-play goals, two short-handed goals and 11 game-winning goals. In 35 career WHL playoff games, Fonteyne has 14 points (6G-8A).
The Silvertips are in action Friday, February 2 (7:05 p.m. PST) when they head to the Okanagan to take on the Kelowna Rockets.
