Devils prospect Filmon records first six-goal performance in WHL since 2009
For the first time in nearly 14 years, the WHL saw a six-goal performance from a player as New Jersey Devils prospect Josh Filmon recorded the double hat trick to fuel his Swift Current Broncos to an 8-4 victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings at Rogers Place on Friday evening.
The last player to score six goals in a WHL game was forward Tyler Ennis, who struck six times for the Medicine Hat Tigers in a 6-2 victory over the Prince Albert Raiders on February 27, 2009.
The WHL record for goals in a game by a single player is set at seven, etched into the history books on five separate occasions:
- Brian Propp, Brandon Wheat Kings – January 25, 1977 (BDN def. POR 12-6)
- Ray Ferraro, Brandon Wheat Kings – January 5, 1984 (BDN def. PA 15-4)
- Mark Mackay, Moose Jaw Warriors – December 19, 1984 (MJ def. BDN 12-3)
- Dennis Holland, Portland Winter Hawks – November 23, 1988 (POR def. KAM 10-5)
- Kimbi Daniels, Swift Current Broncos – October 2, 1990 (SC def. MH 7-4)
A product of Winnipeg, Man., Filmon scored twice in the first period, with both goals coming before the game was five minutes old, including a power-play effort to give his team a 2-0 advantage. The scoring wave continued for Filmon in the second period, as he added another four goals, including one shorthanded and three at even strength.
Try as he might, Filmon came up empty in the third period of play, unable to join the likes of his aforementioned Broncos family Kimbi Daniels. Filmon’s best opportunity to tie the record came in the late stages of the third period as he broke in alone on Oil Kings goaltender Ronin Geraghty, who stymied the Devils prospect.
Prior to his outstanding effort Friday night, Filmon had previously recorded one career hat trick on December 27, 2021 vs. Lethbridge. His career high for goals in a season is 23, established over the course of 67 games during the 2021-22 campaign. Following Friday’s offensive outburst, Filmon now has 20 goals in 25 games this season. The impressive performance launched Filmon into a tie for sixth place in WHL goal scoring this season.
With 34 points (20G-14A) in 25 contests, Filmon leads the Broncos in scoring.
Selected by the New Jersey Devils in the sixth round (166th overall) of the 2022 NHL Draft, Filmon has spent his entire WHL career with the Broncos, appearing in 109 career regular season games, registering 83 points (47G-36A).
The Broncos selected Filmon with a fourth-round pick (67th overall) in the 2019 WHL Draft.
