Moose Jaw Warriors and The Mosiac Company Commit $90,000 to stop Hunger
Moose Jaw, SK—The Mosaic Company in partnership with the Moose Jaw Warriors have announced a $90,000 commitment to Hunger in Moose Jaw to fund the Child Nutrition Program.
The partnership is titled, “Growing Tomorrows Minds”, fittingly named as the Child Nutrition program allows kids to have nutritious lunch’s everyday, which are a vital part of a child performing well at school. Not only does the program fuel learning at school; “Growing Tomorrows Minds” showcases the importance of nutrition and a healthy lunch by creating awareness and providing knowledge of the fact that there are children who go hungry right here in our own city.
Hunger in Moose Jaw has been quietly working to end hunger in our community for the past sixteen years. Through their Child Nutrition Program, over 250 lunches are packed for students throughout Moose Jaw every single day. The program itself packs a total of 40,000 healthy lunches a year— with 1000 prepared each week which are all prepared in a 140 sq. ft kitchen. Hunger in Moose Jaw relies on donations and grants to make this program possible.
"Over the past five years Mosaic has consistently delivered on its mission of helping the world grow the food it needs, and this mission will drive us well into the future," said Brad DeLorey, Director, Public Affairs, The Mosaic Company. “This partnership will allow us to help alleviate child hunger which reaffirms our commitment to looking after the communities where our employees live and work,” added DeLorey.
"We are so grateful for the support of the Warriors and The Mosaic Company and are very thankful to have these funds securely in place for the next three years,” said Executive Director of Hunger in Moose Jaw, Carol Acton. “This generous act is truly overwhelming and will have a huge impact on this community,” added Acton. “When we work together to address the issue of hunger and poverty we not only improve life for those we serve, but the community as a whole,” commented Acton. “We know that good nutrition plays such a major role in the educational success of a child and our aim is to ensure that hunger is not a factor in that success,” said Carol. “We’ve enjoyed having the team come to visit and volunteer. Not only have they helped in the kitchen making lunches, but spent some time in our preschool–even taking the time to read stories,” said Acton. “Again, thank you to Mosaic and to the Warriors; we are excited about our partnership and about the work that will be done for the children and families of Moose Jaw because of this great gift,” added Carol.
The Warriors look forward to continuing to volunteer their time in the kitchen as well as helping with the delivery of lunches to the schools. “The time the players have spent down at Hunger in Moose Jaw is something that will stay with them forever,” commented Director of Community Relations, Marnel Rasmussen. “On one occasion, the players were visiting a school when the lunches from Hunger were delivered; the players asked if those were the same lunches they helped pack. The look in their eyes told me that they fully understood what our time at Hunger in Moose Jaw means to those kids who receive that brown bag each day,” said Rasmussen.
Moose Jaw Warrior, Quinton Howden was named the champion for “Growing Tomorrows Minds.” “It’s a great honor to be heading up this program— Hunger in Moose Jaw works very hard to ensure no kid goes hungry in this City,” said Howden. “I’m very proud of our team for being part of something that can change so many lives,” added Howden.
“Through our corporate partnerships, the Warriors are able to give back to the people of Moose Jaw who have supported us since the organization began 25 years ago,” said Director of Business Operations, Corey Nyhagen. “Both our players and organization serve as a great figurehead in spreading awareness about issues affecting our own community and from there working to alleviate these issues,” added Nyhagen. “This partnership is going to continue for years to come and will be a true marker in our franchise history,” said Nyhagen.
Following the morning press conference, the Warriors will be making a special on ice presentation to kick off the partnership during the first intermission at the Warriors home game. This initiative will serve as the cornerstone of the “Warriors Have Heart” program. Warriors Have Heart encompasses every community enhancement program the Warriors support and execute throughout the season. The program showcases the Warriors time off the ice as they find ways to impact the community in a big way.
