Lassi Thomson inks three-year, entry-level contract with Ottawa Senators
Kelowna Rockets defenceman Lassi Thomson has put pen to paper on a three-year, entry-level contract with the Ottawa Senators.
The Finnish rear guard was selected 19th overall by the Senators at the 2019 NHL Draft last month in Vancouver, B.C.
A 6-foot-0, 187-pound product of Tampere, Finland, Thomson’s first season in North America was a success as he led all WHL rookie defencemen in scoring with 41 points (17G-24A) in 63 games. His 17 goals were tied for third among all all WHL defencemen.
“We have good coach, good team,” Thomson said of how he grew during his time in Kelowna. “It’s pretty cool.”
The Rockets selected Thomson in the first round, 53rd overall, of the 2018 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft. In the third game of his WHL career, Thomson scored his first-career goal, doing so against the Prince George Cougars on Sept. 26, 2018. During the season, Thomson posted a career-high four points in a game against the Victoria Royals on Oct. 19, 2018.
In January, Thomson represented the Rockets at the WHL at the 2019 Sherwin Williams CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Red Deer, Alta.
At the conclusion of the regular season, Thomson was named to the WHL’s Western Conference second all-star team and the Western Conference Rookie of the Year.
