Mississauga, ON – The Kootenay Ice took a loss in their opening round-robin contest at the 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup, falling 5-0 to the Owen Sound Attack at Hershey Centre in Mississauga, ON.
Robby Mignardi scored two goals for the OHL Champion Attack, who move to 1-0 in round-robin play at the tournament. Roman Berdnikov also scored twice for Owen Sound while Andrew Shaw, Mike Halmo and Keevin Cutting each picked up two assists.
Jordan Binnington made 29 saves to post a shutout for the Attack, who killed off all five Kootenay power play chances, including a 5-on-3 in the opening period.
Goaltender Nathan Lieuwen made 27 saves for the WHL Champion Ice, who fall to 0-1 and suffer just their second defeat in their last 14 games.
Mignardi opened the scoring 16:49 into the opening period when Shaw found him all alone in front of the net. Berdnikov gave the Attack a 2-0 lead just 3:30 into the second period, snapping a shot past Lieuwen off the rush.
Mignardi gave the Attack a 3-0 lead, scoring on a shorthanded breakaway 12:29 into the third period.
Berdnikov – with his second of the game – and Garrett Wilson scored late in the third period while on a five-minute power play.
The Ice are back in action on Sunday as they face the tournament host Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors in round-robin action.
