FRIDAY’S WHL ROUND-UP
WARRIORS MELT ICE – Quinton Howden scored twice and set up another to led the Moose Jaw Warriors to a 6-4 win over the visiting Kootenay Ice in Western Hockey League action on Friday night.
Dylan Hood notched a goal and set up three more while Spencer Edwards – with a goal and two helpers – Collin Bowman and Antonin Honejsek also scored for the Warriors (18-12-0-2), who had lost their previous two outings. Thomas Heemskerk, a former member of the Ice, made 31 saves to claim his 70th career win.
Elgin Pearce scored three goals and Joe Antilla added a goal and two assists for the Ice (20-8-1-2), who trailed 4-1 after the first period and 5-2 after the second. Nathan Lieuwen and Brett Teskey combined for 22 saves in the loss.
BLADES 5, SILVERTIPS 4 O/T
Jake Trask scored his second goal of the game 1:44 into overtime to lift the Saskatoon Blades to a 5-4 victory over the visiting Everett Silvertips on Friday.
Matej Stransky evened up the game at 4-4 with 10 seconds remaining in regulation while Stefan Elliott – with a goal and an assist – and Dalton Thrower also scored for the Blades (23-7-0-1), who earn their second win in a row and move four points ahead of Red Deer and Kootenay for first place in the Eastern Conference. Steven Stanford made 16 saves in the win.
Parker Stanfield scored twice, Tyler Maxwell tallied his 20th goal of the season and added three assists and Josh Birkholz also counted for the Silvertips (14-13-2-3), who were outshot 47-20 by the hosts. Kent Simpson turned in a 42-save effort in the loss.
HITMEN 4, PATS 3 O/T
Kris Foucault scored 25 seconds into overtime to lead the Calgary Hitmen to a 4-3 win over the visiting Regina Pats on Friday.
Matt MacKenzie notched a goal and two assists while Jimmy Bubnick and Justin Kirsch also scored for the Hitmen (8-21-2-0), who rallied from a 3-0 deficit midway through the second period to earn the win. Michael Snider made 10 saves in the victory.
Thomas Frazee, Garrett Mitchell and Dyson Stevenson scored for the Pats (8-17-5-1), who suffer their second straight loss. Damien Ketlo made 12 stops in a losing cause.
BRUINS 4, HURRICANES 3
Ryan Howse scored two power play goals to help the visiting Chilliwack Bruins to a 4-3 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Friday.
Robin Soudek – with a goal and two assists – and Jamie Crooks also scored while Roman Horak chipped in three assists for the Bruins (14-12-2-1), who were 3-for-7 on the power play in the contest. Lucas Gore made 35 saves to record the win.
Cam Braes, Austin Fyten and Mitch Maxwell, who converted a late penalty shot, scored for the Hurricanes (12-13-2-3), who have lost five of their last six games. Brandon Anderson made 22 saves in a losing cause.
ROCKETS 5, REBELS 1
Geordie Wudrick and Evan Bloodoff each scored twice to lead the visiting Kelowna Rockets to a 5-1 win over the Red Deer Rebels on Friday.
Colton Scissons – with his sixth of the season – also counted for the Rockets (17-13-0-0), who scored the game’s first four goals. Adam Brown turned aside 37 of 38 shots he faced to backstop the Rockets to the win.
Andrej Kudrna scored the only goal for the Rebels (20-8-1-2), who see a four-game winning streak come to an end. Darcy Kuemper and Dawson Guhle combined for 15 saves in a losing effort.
BLAZERS 3, BRONCOS 2
Chase Schaber scored the winner and added two assists to lead the Kamloops Blazers to a 3-2 victory over the visiting Swift current Broncos on Friday.
Jordan DePape also notched a goal and two assists while Brendan Ranford tallied a goal and an assist for the Blazers (15-14-1-1), who converted their lone power play in the game. Jeff Bosch made 16 saves to record his 11th win of the season.
Cody Eakin scored both goals for the Broncos (18-17-0-0), who see a two-game winning streak snapped. Mark Friesen made 17 saves in the defeat.
WINTERHAWKS 4, COUGARS 1
Sven Bartschi scored his 20th goal of the season to help the Portland Winterhawks to a 4-1 win over the visiting Prince George Cougars on Friday.
Brad Ross, Spencer Bennett and Riley Boychuk also scored for the Winterhawks (23-8-3-0), who earn just their second win in their last eight games. Mac Carruth made 22 saves in the victory.
Spencer Asuchak scored the only goal for the Cougars (15-13-2-1), who suffer their fourth straight loss and fall to third place in the B.C. Division. Ty Rimmer made 26 saves in the loss.
AMERICANS 4, THUNDERBIRDS 1
Brendan Shinnimin tallied a goal and two assists to lead the Tri-City Americans to a 4-1 win over the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds on Friday.
Adam Hughesman – with a goal and an assist – Brooks Macek and Kruise Reddick also scored for the Americans (17-10-1-1), who went 2-for-10 on the power play en route to their sixth win in their last eight games. Drew Owsley made 22 saves to claim his 14th win of the season.
Charles Wells scored the only goal for the Thunderbirds (13-9-3-4), who were outshot 48-23 by their U.S. Division rivals. Calvin Pickard made 44 saves in a losing cause.
CHIEFS 3, GIANTS 2 S/O
Blake Gal scored the only goal in a shootout to lift the visiting Spokane Chiefs to a 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Giants on Friday.
Tyler Johnson – with his 20th of the season – and Jared Cowen scored in regulation for the Chiefs (16-9-2-2), who earn their fourth straight victory. James Reid made 20 saves through regulation, and wasn’t beaten in the shootout to record the win.
Michael Burns and Brendan Gallagher scored for the Giants (15-11-1-4), who were outshot 45-22 by the visiting Chiefs. Mark Segal made 43 saves through three periods and overtime, but was beaten once in the shootout to take the loss.
