GAME RECAP: Stefan nets natural hatty, Tips fall 6-3 to Portland
EVERETT, Wash. — A strong start fell flat for the shorthanded Everett Silvertips, as the Portland Winterhawks picked up a 6-3 victory at Angel of the Winds Arena Sunday night.
Julien Maze got the Tips on the board with the first shot of the game just 27 seconds into play, his first goal on home ice and second of the season. Hayden Smith followed up with his second of the year at 8:24, fielding a Ben Hemmerling saucer pass and wiring it past Hawks netminder Nick Avakyan.
Portland tied things up late in the first, with a powerplay goal scored by Gabe Klassen at 18:57 and an even-strength goal by Josh Zakreski at 19:25.
Tarin Smith netted a coast-to-coast powerplay goal for his sixth of the season at 1:08 in the first period, but Portland rallied back at 1:56 with Zakreski’s second of the game. James Stefan netted a natural hat trick to propel the Winterhawks to a 6-3 win, with goals at 6:39, 12:04 and 16:10 in the second period.
