Memorial Cup Champs Celebrated in the Okanagan
The Memorial Cup champion Kelowna Rockets team of 2004 will see their names enter the Central Okanagan Sports Hall of Fame on Thursday.
In a season which Kelowna was also crowned WHL champions, the Rockets became just the third WHL team to host and win the Memorial Cup in 2004, winning four straight games and outscoring its opponents 9-3 en route to the championship.
Ex-Rockets goaltender Kelly Guard (4-0, 0.75 GAA, 971 SV%) was the tournament’s MVP and will be among the players that will be in Kelowna to accept the induction on behalf of his teammates.
“I still get chills when I talk about it with players or coaches who were there back then. It was a special time,” Guard told the Kelowna Capital News.
There will special presentations commemorating at Prospera Place on Friday, during the Rockets game against the Portland Winterhawks.
