FRIDAY’S WHL PRE-SEASON ROUND-UP
HAWKS TOP T-BIRDS IN OVERTIME – Alex Schoenborn scored the winner 3:05 into overtime as the Portland Winterhawks defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-3 in action at the Everett pre-season tournament on Friday in Everett, WA.
Taylor Peters, Chase De Leo and Josh Hansen also scored for the Winterhawks (1-0-0-0), who went 1-for-6 on the power play in the contest. Brendan Burke made 13 saves on 15 shots over the game’s first half for the Hawks, while Cam Lanigan stopped 13 of 14 shots over the second half of the contest, earning the win.
Justin Hickman, former Hawk Seth Swenson and Branden Troock scored for the Thunderbirds (0-0-1-0), who were 2-for-3 on the man advantage. Brandon Glover and Danny Mumaugh combined for 29 saves in the loss.
AMERICANS 4, SILVERTIPS 1
Justin Feser scored twice and set up another to lead the Tri-City Americans to a 4-1 win over the Everett Silvertips in other action on Friday at the Everett tournament in Everett, WA.
Philip Tot scored once and added two assists while Michal Plutnar also counted for the Americans (1-0-0-0), while Eric Comrie and Evan Sarthou combined for 21 saves in the victory.
Carson Stadnyk scored the only goal for the Silvertips (0-1-0-0), who were scoreless on four power play chances. Andy Desautels and Troy Trombley combined for 25 saves in the setback.
ROCKETS 4, GIANTS 3
Tyson Baillie and Ryan Olsen scored in the third period to lift the visiting Kelowna Rockets to a 4-3 win over the Vancouver Giants on Friday in Ladner, B.C.
Defenceman Stewart Coyle tallied a goal and two assists while Cole Linaker also counted for the Rockets (1-0-0-0), while Jordon Cooke turned in a 37-save effort to earn the victory.
Cain Franson scored twice and Carter Popoff also scored for the Giants (0-1-0-0), who took a 3-2 lead into the third period but gave up two goals in the frame en route to the loss. Liam Liston and Payton Lee combined for 31 saves in the defeat.
BLAZERS 5, ROYALS 3
JC Lipon scored three goals and set up another to pace the visiting Kamloops Blazers to a 5-3 win over the Victoria Royals on Friday night.
Dylan Willick and Chase Souto also scored for the Blazers (2-0-0-0), who sweep their home-and-home exhibition series versus the Royals. Taran Kozun made 24 saves in the win.
Clay Spencer scored twice while Kolton Dixon also scored for the Royals (0-2-0-0). Jared Rathjen and Michal Herringer combined for 35 saves in a losing cause.
