Wolves add long-time NHL Scouting Director Tony MacDonald as Senior Advisor to Hockey Operations
(Greater Sudbury, ON) The Sudbury Wolves are pleased to announce that Tony MacDonald has been added to the Hockey Operations department as a Senior Advisor to the Club.
MacDonald has had an outstanding hockey career spanning across the NHL and OHL, most recently with the Carolina Hurricanes organization for 25 years, the past 12 of which he was their Director of Amateur Scouting. He recently retired from this position following this past June’s NHL draft.
“I have known Tony since he was my General Manager on the Detroit Ambassadors,” said Rob Papineau, VP Hockey Operations and General Manager. “He has a remarkable resume having been to six Memorial Cups in his career as well as having spent the past 12 seasons as the Director of Amateur Scouting for the Carolina Hurricanes. He was the person responsible for drafting the talent that helped the Hurricanes to the Eastern Conference Final as well as the Charlotte Checkers win this year’s Calder Cup.”
Tony is from Guelph, Ont. and will have a primary focus on scouting the OHL and key international events for the club. He’ll also become a tremendous resource for the Wolves Hockey Operations team.
“It’s an exciting time for me to be reconnecting with Rob along with Wolves Head Coach Cory Stillman,” said MacDonald. “Having long standing histories with both of these gentlemen is especially special to me and I am looking forward to working with them again. Rob, I drafted back in 1989 with the Detroit Ambassadors in the expansion draft and reunited with him as a player, intern and scout many times over the years. Cory was on the Stanley Cup team in 2006 and player development coach in Carolina so I have had the opportunity to work closely with him.”

He has a tremendous network of contacts in the NHL and the entire hockey world and will be a great advocate for the Sudbury Wolves. Tony is a professional gentleman of character and his addition helps us in our mission to be a preferred place to play as well as a Memorial Cup contender,” Papineau added.

About Tony MacDonald:
NHL career spanned a total of 27 seasons serving two years with the LA Kings before joining the Hartford Whalers in 1994 and serving 25 years with the Whalers/ Hurricanes – retired as Director of Amateur Scouting with the Hurricanes in July 2019.
Carolina Hurricanes won the Eastern Conference Championship in 2002 and were defeated in the Stanley Cup Finals by the Detroit Red Wings.
The Hurricanes won the Eastern Conference Championship again in 2006 and went on to win the Stanley Cup defeating the Edmonton Oilers in a 7-game series.
MacDonald began CHL coaching / Managing/ Scouting career in 1974 with the Brockville Braves, coaching the Cornwall Royals’ affiliate also scouting with the Royals of the QMJHL before going on to the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL.
Joined the Windsor Spitfires as Director of Scouting in 1983 / 1990 Appointed General Manager of the Detroit Ambassadors expansion team – first U.S. based OHL franchise / CHL tenure included six trips to the Memorial Cup with Cornwall Royals of the QMJHL , the Kitchener Rangers , Windsor Spitfires and Detroit Jr. Red Wings of the OHL. Memorial Cup wins in 1974 and 1980 with the Cornwall Royals (QMJHL) and the OHL Kitchener Rangers in 1982.
Coaching stints in the OHL included Windsor Spitfires 1986 and Guelph Storm as Associate Coach /Advisor to GM in 1992/93.
