U SPORTS Report: Nov. 15, 2023
A total of 228 OHL alumni are playing in the U SPORTS men’s hockey ranks this season. Throughout the year the U SPORTS Report will keep tabs on former OHL names doing great things in the OUA, AUS and Canada West ranks on the road to the 2024 U SPORTS University Cup to be held from March 14-17 in Toronto, Ont.

The University of New Brunswick Reds lead the U SPORTS Rankings for the sixth consecutive week, building on their perfect 12-0 record. Remaining the only undefeated team in the country, the Reds saw goals from OHL alumni Sean McGurn, Brady Gilmour, Justin Nolet, Isaac Nurse, Cody Morgan, Austen Keating, and Cole MacKay in an 8-3 win over the Dalhousie Tigers on Friday. The Reds continued their winning ways on Saturday, with former London Knights forward Jason Willms and Saginaw Spirit graduate Gilmour each recorded a goal and an assist as UNB defeated the StFX X-Men 5-3.

THE BAYS GO HEAD TO HEAD
The Lakehead University Thunderwolves made a trip to North Bay over the weekend, defeating the Nipissing Lakers in back-to-back victories. The Thunderwolves clinched their first win of the weekend on Thursday as Saginaw Spirit alumnus Ben Badalamenti netted a goal, while Kingston Frontenacs graduate Colin Van Den Hurk tallied a pair of assists to make it 3-3 before Thunder Bay would win in a shootout. Another tight matchup on Friday, Lakehead defeated the Lakers in overtime as Van Den Hurk found the back of the net, while former Sudbury Wolves forward Nick DeGrazia added an assist for a perfect weekend on the road.
HUSKIES RETURN TO THE WIN COLUMN
The Saint Mary’s Huskies bounced back with a 3-1 win over the UPEI Panthers on Wednesday night. Former Hamilton Bulldogs forward Bradey Johnson played a nifty backhand pass to London Knights alumnus Nathan Dunkley who scored his fifth of the season to put the Huskies up 1-0. Former Barrie Colts forward Declan McDonnell would also contribute a pair of goals to the victory.

Saint Mary’s finished off their two-win weekend with a shootout victory over the Acadia Axemen on Saturday, as former Guelph Storm forward Cedric Ralph scored a marker for the Huskies.
BADGERS BEST THE OUA
Extending their win streak to five, the Brock University Badgers continue to dominate the OUA, playing to a 11-1 record on the season. Opening up the weekend with a 5-1 win over the Waterloo Warriors on Friday, London Knights alumni Cole Tymkin had a standout performance recording a goal and three assists, while former Niagara IceDogs forward Justin Brack, Guelph Storm graduate Jacob Roach, and Kingston Frontenacs alumnus Tyler Burnie each contributed to the win. The Badgers were back in action on Saturday, defeating the Laurier Golden Hawks 2-1.
STFX’S HAWEL EARNS U SPORTS HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Former Kitchener Rangers forward Liam Hawel was named the U SPORTS Hockey Player of the Week last week, scoring four goals over two back-to-back victories for the StFX X-Men. The third-year business student also earned first star honours for both performances. Last Friday, he scored a goal in the first period, followed by another one in the second in the X-Men’s 4-3 victory over Acadia. On the Saturday, Hawel scored another two goals in the first period to lead the X-Men over Saint Mary’s 4-3. Hawel played five seasons in the OHL between the Soo Greyhounds, Guelph Storm and the Rangers, registering 233 points (87-146-233) over 313 games played.
