Wheat Kings crush Ice
Brandon, MB. – The Brandon Wheat Kings got back on the winning track Remembrance Day with a decisive 7-2 victory over the visiting Winnipeg ICE at Westoba Place.
The win was Brandon’s second in three games against their provincial rivals this season but its first on home ice as the ICE edged the Wheat Kings 3-2 in their 2019 Home Opener n September.
Following a scoreless opening period, the two teams traded goals before the Wheat Kings struck for four unanswered goals in a span of 6:23 and were well on their way to snapping a 2-game losing streak.
Brandon got goals from seven different players – Cole Reinhart in the first, Ty Thorpe, Braden Schneider, Ridly Greig and Johnny Hooker in the second as well as Connor Gutenberg and Chad Nychuk in the third.
Isaac Johnson and Michael Milne scored in a losing cause for the ICE, who were outshot 29-25.
Not only was it a huge win for the Wheat Kings against their provincial rivals, it was a great day for the 4,412 fans in attendance. Thanks to the 7-goal outburst fans receive 50% off their online pizza order at Dominos on Tuesday, ticket holders will save 6 cents off per litre at Heritage Co-op tomorrow and they will have seven days to save $7 off a dinner Buffet at Aaltos in the Canad Inns.
In addition to that, the Wheat Kings scored three powerplay goals on the night, meaning fans can display their ticket stub at McDonalds on Tuesday for a “free” regular order of french fries and Hooker’s second period marker sent fans into a frenzy as it came during the DQ Blizzard Minute.
That means fans in attendance can now visit DQ for a “free” small Oreo Blizzard on Tuesday.
This marked the first time that the Wheat Kings have earned their fans free fries and a DQ Blizzard this season.
Monday’s crowd was bolstered by over twenty minor hockey teams and several dozen families from CFB Shilo, who were attending the game courtesy of Koch Fertilizer Canada.
With the win, Brandon improved to 9-12-0 on the season.
The Wheat Kings don’t play again until the weekend when they open up a 3-game Alberta road trip with a game against the Rebels in Red Deer on Saturday night.
Brandon then plays in Edmonton and Medicine Hat, before returning home to host the Calgary Hitmen and Regina Pats on Friday and Saturday, November 22nd and 23rd.
