Edmonton, AB – The Brandon Wheat Kings had their three-game winning streak snapped on Friday night, falling 9-2 to the Edmonton Oil Kings at Rogers Place.
The Oil Kings had 11 players with multi-point nights while scoring twice on both the power-play and penalty kill on route to the victory.
“I take as much responsibility as the players tonight,” said Head Coach Don MacGillivray. “We weren’t ready to play and that is on us. Give Edmonton credit, they came hard. We were standing around watching and the game was over at the end of the first.”
The Oil Kings scored twice in the opening 5:18 and didn’t look back, wrapping up the first period with a 5-0 lead.
Rylen Roersma (1G-1A) and Tyson Zimmer (1G) scored the lone goals for Brandon, who struggled to get anything going on the night where the lineup once again consisted of 11 forwards and seven defense. That short bench was made even shorter in the middle frame when Nate Danielson left the game after taking a puck to the ear.
“We have no excuse,” added MacGillivray. “Sure, we have some injuries and a short bench but that shouldn’t affect how we play the game. We have to get pucks deep, make good decisions, and do the little things right. The five guys on the ice have to be better as a group no matter who is out there.”
Carson Bjarnason stopped 23 of 32 shots he faced in forty minutes of action while Nick Jones made his WHL debut in relief, stopping all five Oil Kings shots on goal in the third period.
The Wheat Kings will look to rebound on Saturday night when they head to Red Deer to take on the Rebels. Catch the game on Brandon’s Bounce 96.1 and the iHeartRadio app beginning with the Drummonds Farm Services pre-game show at 7:45 MB time.
