CANADA DROPS 5-2 DECISION TO SWEDEN AT WJC
Team Canada dropped the final game of its preliminary round to Team Sweden by a score of 5-2 on Thursday at the 2016 World Junior Championships in Helsinki, Finland.
Sweden scored a pair of power play goals early on in the opening frame before Mitchell Stephens responded with a goal for Canada to make the score 2-1 for Sweden heading into the second period.
Team Sweden would strike again on the power play as Adrian Kempe scored to restore their two goal lead.
In the third period, Canada answered with a power play goal from Mitchell Marner with Victoria Royals defenceman Joe Hicketts picking up the assist to cut Sweden’s lead to 4-2 but that was as close as they came. Sweden would tack on an empty netter to seal a 5-2 win and finish first in the Group A standings with a record of 4-0.
Sweden outshot Canada 32-24 and finished 3/7 on the power play while Canada went 1/4 on their power play chances.
