WHL scoring leader Nic Petan of the Portland Winterhawks got one of the three goals for Team Orr while his Winterhawks’ teammates Seth Jones and Oliver Bjorkstrand each picked up an assist in the battle of the top NHL draft-eligible prospects from the Canadian Hockey League.
Spencer Martin of the OHL’s Mississauga Steelheads and Philippe Desrosiers of the QMJHL’s Rimouski Oceanic combined for a 20-save shutout for Team Orr, who outshot Team Cherry 36-20 in the contest. Martin turned aside 16 shots over the first 31:21 of the game while Desrosiers made four saves the rest of the way.
Adam Erne of the Quebec Remparts opened the scoring 3:39 into the opening period, burying a rebound off Seth Jones’ chance in close.
Laurent Dauphin of the Chicoutimi Sangueneens put Team Orr up by two goals 4:07 into the second frame, skating straight up the middle and firing a low shot that beat Halifax Mooseheads’ netminder Zachary Fucale.
Petan rounded out the scoring for Team Orr just 3:17 after Dauphin’s goal. The 17-year-old from Delta, B.C., took a feed from Remparts’ forward Anthony Duclair, got a step on the defenceman and put it past Fucale on the short side.
Petan, who leads the WHL in scoring with 74 points, enjoyed a dominant performance alongside Duclair and fellow Winterhawk Bjorkstrand, creating several excellent scoring chances and controlling the play in the offensive zone.
Fucale took the loss for Team Cherry, allowing three goals on 20 shots over the first half of the contest. Edmonton Oil Kings’ goaltender Tristan Jarry turned in a valiant performance over the second half of the game for Team Cherry. The WHL’s leading goaltender in goals-against average and shutouts stopped all 16 shots he faced, including making several outstanding saves, in 28:39 of action.
