Brooks’ Two Goals Lift Pats to Win Over Ice
Regina, Saskatchewan – The Regina Pats (4-2-1-0) got back in the win column and now have points in five straight games after a 5-4 win over the Kootenay Ice (2-4-0-0).
First Period
It didn’t take long for Kootenay to get its first opportunity on the powerplay as Kyle Burroughs took a trip to the penalty box. Luke Philp had the best chance on the man advantage, ripping a rebound off the shoulder of Daniel Wapple. The Ice kept up the pressure and on a quick break up ice, Jaedon Descheneau showed of his high skill level with a great move to get in on goal and deke around Wapple. After falling behind, the Pats took over, outshooting Kootenay 14-3 the rest of the way. Wyatt Hoflin stood strong against the Regina attack, maintaining the 1-0 lead after twenty minutes.
Second Period
Regina finally got on the board after a flurry of action. Dryden Hunt got open and was robbed by Hoflin, but Chase Harrison jumped on the rebound for his first WHL goal and a 1-1 tie. With their second five-on-three opportunity, the Pats used the extra space to get Dryden Hunt room to blow a shot to the back of the net and take the lead. The edge didn’t hold up long as with a powerplay chance of their own, the Ice tied things up courtesy of Descheneau’s second goal of the game. From there, the goaltenders shut things down and the score stalled at 2-2 despite a 35-22 shot count favouring Regina after two frames.
Third Period
With twenty minutes to decide a winner, the Pats didn’t waste any time in making their case for the two points. Adam Brooks gave the Queen City Kids a 3-2 lead with a bullet wrist shot to the back of the net. Just 28 seconds later, Braden Christoffer busted his way to the front and went roof to give his team some breathing room. They would need it as Descheneau finished off the hat-trick on a breakaway, going five-hole on Wapple. Then the shifty forward took away the lead, feeding Levi Cable in front for a one-timer goal and a 4-4 deadlock. With time winding down, the stage was set for Brooks to strike again as the third year forward went off the post and in to put Regina ahead for good, 5-4. The Pats wrapped the game leading the shot count 47-31.
The Blue and White are back in action Friday night when they welcome the Tri-City Americans to the Brandt Centre for a 7 p.m. puck drop. The Pats will honour alumni of the 1973-74 Memorial Cup Championship team in a pre-game ceremony.
