Going into his eighth season with the Americans, Terry Bangen reduced his role with the team prior to the 2010-11 season, stepping down as Assistant General Manager and the Director of Player Personnel but remaining on staff as a Senior Advisor of Hockey Operations.
Bangen first entered the coaching world at the age of 24, when he served as an Assistant Coach for the Sherwood Park Junior B team. For the next 19 years, he held the position of Assistant Athletic Director of Cariboo College in Kamloops. During his time at Cariboo, Bangen also held the position of head coach twice (1976-79 and 1981-1989), leading his team to five Canadian College Athletic Association finals.
In 1989, Bangen made the jump to major junior hockey when he accepted the role of Assistant Coach with the WHL’s Kamloops Blazers. He spent five years with the Blazers, winning three Memorial Cup Championships in the process. In 1995, Bangen moved east, assuming the role of Head Coach of the McGill University Redmen for one season before making his way to the NHL as an Assistant Coach with the Vancouver Canucks. He rejoined former Blazers’ coach Don Hay in Tri-City for two seasons (1998-99 and 1999-00) as Assistant GM/Assistant Coach before accepting a position within Hockey Canada.
