North Bay Battalion captain Mike Amadio decided to turn on the jets and blaze a lane to the net, snapping home a wrister 46 seconds into overtime to give his club a 4-3 victory over the Guelph Storm on Thursday.
Amadio’s 28th of the season was accompanied by two assists in the game as the fourth year veteran helped push the Troops into fourth place in the Eastern Conference in the first of three games this weekend.
North Bay goaltender Jake Smith made 28 saves while rookie defenceman Cam Dineen had another multi-point performance with a goal and an assist.
The Battalion win comes in one of five games around the league on Thursday.
NORTH BAY 4 GUELPH 3 OT – The Guelph Storm put up considerable resistance, but in the end would have to settle for a single point as North Bay Battalion captain Mike Amadio scored his 28th goal of the season on a sensational solo effort 46 seconds into overtime for a 4-3 decision. The Troops pass Mississauga for fourth place in the Eastern Conference with the victory that saw Amadio finish the night with a goal and two assists while offensively capable rearguard Cam Dineen had a goal and an assist and goaltender Jake Smith turned aside 28 shots. Guelph forward Givani Smith scored twice, giving him nine in his last eight games and 18 on the season. The Storm have now collected a point in five straight contests.

WINDSOR 5 FLINT 3 – Draft eligible talents Mikhail Sergachev and Logan Brown each had a goal and three assists to lead the Windsor Spitfires over visiting Flint 5-3. The Firebirds hung around but weren’t able to overcome a three goal deficit out of the gate as the Spits improved to 27-12-5-0. Winnipeg Jets prospect Brendan Lemieux had a goal and an assist for Windsor while rookie goaltender Michael DiPietro made 22 saves to improve to 13-3-1-0 on the season. Luke Kirwan, Vili Saarijarvi and Dane Johnstone scored for the Firebirds.

LONDON 6 SARNIA 2 – The London Knights stayed hot against the Sarnia Sting as Christian Dvorak potted his third hat-trick of the season in a 6-2 road victory. London’s fourth straight win saw the Knights jump out to a 4-0 lead with first period markers from Dvorak, Daniel Bernhardt and Mitch Marner. Dvorak and Marner would strike again in the second while Sarnia’s Patrick White gave the home crowd something to cheer about. Sarnia rookie Ryan McGregor struck in the third to bring the Sting within three but Dvorak would complete the hat-trick on a breakaway with under four minutes to go for a 6-2 final. London’s Tyler Parsons made 26 saves to improve to 23-4-2-1 while Matthew Tkachuk added to his league-leading assist total with three more in the win.

PETERBOROUGH 3 SAGINAW 1 – Matthew Mancina made 48 saves to lead the Peterborough Petes past the Saginaw Spirit 3-1 despite being heavily outshot. Peterborough product Logan DeNoble popped in the winner 7:56 into the second period before Greg Betzold’s 29th of the season served as insurance. Adam Timleck also scored for the Petes while rookie Cole Coskey had the lone marker for Saginaw. Sophomore Petes defenceman Matthew Timms earned second star recognition with a pair of assists as the Petes find themselves in a fifth place tie with Mississauga in the Eastern Conference to start the weekend.

OWEN SOUND 7 NIAGARA 4 – The Owen Sound Attack crashed the Pink in the Rink party Thursday night in St. Catharines as Damir Sharipzyanov earned first star honours with a goal and an assist in a 7-4 road win. The Attack’s first win in St. Catharines since February 2011 also saw Bryson Cianfrone, Kevin Hancock, Petrus Palmu and Ethan Szypula finish the night with a goal and an assist each while Daniel Dekoning recorded the win in goal. Overage veteran Jordan Maletta was a bright spot for the IceDogs, scoring twice to earn second star honours.
