Friday Highlights: 67’s keep pace

Big 6’7″ defenceman Stepan Falkovsky scored in a fourth straight game as the Ottawa 67’s kept pace with the first place Kingston Frontenacs in the East Division, defeating the Niagara IceDogs 6-3 on the road.

Jeremiah Addison and Sam Studnicka scored two shorthanded goals inside the opening three minutes of the first period, giving the 67’s the edge they’d need to improve to 11-7-1-0 in one of eight games around the league on Friday.

OTTAWA 6 NIAGARA 3 – The Ottawa 67’s kept pace in the East Division with a 6-3 road victory over the Niagara IceDogs. Sam Studnicka, Jeremiah Addison and Trent Mallette all had a goal and an assist in the victory while Liam Herbst made 34 saves in goal. Dante Salituro earned first star honours with an assist in the game as Ottawa scored a pair of shorthanded markers to improve to 11-7-1-0. Ottawa defenceman Stepan Falkovsky scored in a fourth straight game, giving him 11 points (6-5–11) in 19 games this season.

KINGSTON 4 HAMILTON 3 OT – Spencer Watson was at it again on Friday. A night after scoring twice to lead Team OHL to a 3-0 win over Russia in the CHL Canada Russia Series, Watson set up the winning goal 53 seconds into overtime as Juho Lammikko provided the finish in a 4-3 win over the Hamilton Bulldogs. Kingston defenceman Nathan Billitier scored his first OHL goal in the victory while Ted Nichol and Lawson Crouse also found the back of the net. Goaltender Jeremy Helving made 25 saves to record the victory. Hamilton’s Stephen Harper scored his 13th goal of the season in the loss as the Dogs have now dropped four straight.

FLINT 4 SARNIA 3 – The Flint Firebirds took an emotionally charged 4-3 victory over Sarnia, holding off a Sting comeback attempt to improve to 8-9-0-1. Four first period goals were enough for the Firebirds who had markers from Nicholas Caamano, Ryan Moore, Dane Johnstone and Zach Grzelewski. Will Bitten chipped in with two assists as he’s had points in each of his last four outings. Davis Brown’s first goal of the season got Sarnia’s comeback attempt started, but they weren’t able to climb all the way back to start the weekend.

WINDSOR 7 MISSISSAUGA 4 – Cristiano DiGiacinto and Logan Brown are both getting warmed up for Monday’s Game 4 of the CHL Canada Russia Series in Windsor as both had two goals and an assist in Windsor’s 7-4 victory over Mississauga. Russian blueliner Mikhail Sergachev enjoyed a four point night with a goal and three assists while rookie Cole Carter continued to produce, adding three assists. The Spitfires won despite being outshot 36-29 as goaltender Garret Hughson made 32 saves to improve to 4-0 on the season. Windsor leads the West Division with a record of 13-4-3-0.

LONDON 10 GUELPH 4 – The London Knights were in command early as Mitch Marner scored his 10th goal of the season just 1:06 into action, eventually racking up two goals and three assists in a 10-4 win over Guelph. Kole Sherwood and J.J. Piccinich also had a pair of goals each while Matthew Tkachuk and Christian Dvorak both finished the night with a goal and three assists. London outshot Guelph 47-20, overshadowing a two goal performance from the Storm’s Vladislav Barulin in the process.

KITCHENER 6 SAGINAW 2 – Kitchener Rangers goaltender Luke Opilka put in another solid effort, making 32 saves to earn first star honours in a 6-2 win over the Saginaw Spirit. Darby Llewellyn scored twice while Jeremy Bracco collected three assists as the Rangers, who are the number one ranked team in the country this week, improved to 15-1-3-0. Rookies Cole Coskey and Brady Gilmour had goals for the Spirit.

ERIE 6 OSHAWA 4 – A rematch of the 2015 OHL Finals saw the Erie Otters skate to a 6-4 comeback victory over Oshawa on home ice. The Otters outshot the Generals 40-22 as Taylor Raddysh scored twice and Travis Dermott recorded four assists. Dylan Strome had a goal and an assist while OHL leading scorer Alex DeBrincat picked up a pair of helpers in the win as the Otters improved to 15-2-1-0 heading into a big Saturday night showdown with the London Knights. Goals from Erik Cernak, Taylor Raddysh and Kyle Pettit in the latter half of the third period helped Erie overcome a 4-3 deficit. Michael Dal Colle had a goal and an assist for Oshawa while rookie Kyle MacLean scored his first OHL goal.

NORTH BAY 5 SUDBURY 2 – Nineteen year-old forward Steve Harland had a big night, scoring his first two OHL goals as the North Bay Battalion defeated their northern rivals the Sudbury Wolves 5-2. Daniil Vertiy scored in his first game in a Battalion uniform, adding an assist while captain Mike Amadio had a goal and an assist of his own. Wolves defenceman Brandon Bastasin scored his first OHL goal in the loss.
