The 2017-18 OHL schedule is out! Here’s a look at 10 intriguing events that you won’t want to miss this season:
Sept. 21, 2017 – Saginaw Spirit at Windsor Spitfires (Mastercard Memorial Cup champions celebrate at home on Opening Night):
One of three games on the OHL Opening Night schedule, the 2017 Mastercard Memorial Cup champion Windsor Spitfires open their season on home ice against the Saginaw Spirit. The Spits will celebrate this past month’s thrilling 4-0 run in the CHL’s prestigious national championship. Other Opening Night games include the defending OHL champion Erie Otters visiting the Peterborough Petes and the Ottawa 67’s visiting the Barrie Colts.
Sept. 30, 2017 – Kitchener Rangers at Erie Otters (OHL champions raise banner in home opener):
The Erie Otters will raise their 2017 OHL Championship banner at Erie Insurance Arena prior to puck drop against the Midwest Division rival Kitchener Rangers. The Otters begin the season with four straight games on the road but return home to commemorate their unforgettable 2016-17 season that saw them win their third straight Midwest Division title, second consecutive Hamilton Spectator Trophy, third Western Conference championship, first OHL title since 2002 and reach the Mastercard Memorial Cup Final. The Otters will also feature a new look next season with a new primary logo and matching colour scheme.
Nov. 1, 2017 – First of eight School Day Games on the 2017-18 schedule:
The Kingston Frontenacs visit the Ottawa 67’s and the Erie Otters host the Kitchener Rangers on Wednesday November 1st, marking the first two School Day Games of the 2017-18 season. An additional three take the ice Wednesday November 15th as the Flint Firebirds host the Sarnia Sting, the Hamilton Bulldogs host the Peterborough Petes and the Mississauga Steelheads host the Erie Otters. The Frontenacs return the favour and host the 67’s in a School Day Game on Wednesday November 29th. Two more School Day Games take the ice in February when the Hamilton Bulldogs host the Barrie Colts on Thursday February 8th before the Mississauga Steelheads host the Kitchener Rangers on Wednesday February 14th.
Nov. 9 & 13, 2017 – CIBC Canada Russia Series (Games 3 and 4 in Owen Sound and Sudbury):
The 2017 CIBC Canada Russia Series comes to Ontario on Thursday November 9th in Owen Sound and Monday November 13th in Sudbury. The 15th year of the annual event sees a game return to Owen Sound after Team OHL took a 3-0 win there in 2015. Sudbury will host for a CHL record fourth time following other games in 2007, 2010 and 2013. The Canadian Hockey League won last year’s series by a point total of 13-5.
Dec. 17, 2017 – Gatineau Olympiques vs. Ottawa 67’s (Game 1 of QMJHL/OHL Interleague Series):
Celebrating their 50th anniversary season, the Ottawa 67’s host the first game of an interleague home-and-home set with the cross-river QMJHL counterpart Gatineau Olympiques. The 67’s will visit Gatineau in the back end of the series on Friday January 12th. Both games will count towards each team’s regular season standing.
Dec. 28, 2017 & Jan. 26, 2018 – Friday night frenzy (All 20 teams in action):
The Kitchener Rangers visit the Owen Sound Attack in one of 10 games around the league on Friday December 28th. This, along with Friday January 26th marks the only two dates on the 2017-18 schedule where all 20 teams are in action. Six different dates feature nine games including Sunday October 29th, Friday November 10th, Sunday November 19th, Friday November 24th, Friday February 2nd and Family Day on Monday February 19th.
Jan. 25, 2018 – Sherwin-Williams CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Guelph:
The 2018 Sherwin-Williams CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game comes to Guelph on Thursday January 25th as the CHL’s top draft eligible prospects go head-to-head in the Royal City. Guelph will become the 15th different Canadian city to host the event after Team Cherry took a 7-5 victory in Quebec City last year. The host Storm have had 18 different players compete in the event including representation from forwards Isaac Ratcliffe and Nate Schnarr last January.
Jan. 28, 2018 – CogecoTV Hockey Day in the OHL (Action in North Bay, Kingston, Hamilton):
It’s a broadcast tripleheader for CogecoTV’s Hockey Day in the OHL. The Sunday schedule features the Niagara IceDogs visiting the North Bay Battalion at 1:00pm and the Peterborough Petes visiting the Kingston Frontenacs at 4:00pm before the Sarnia Sting close things out with a visit to the Hamilton Bulldogs at 7:00pm. This marks the fifth annual presentation of the event that highlights OHL hockey in different communities across Ontario.
Feb. 19, 2018 – Family Day in the OHL (Nine games on the schedule):
It’s an action packed Family Day Monday in the OHL with nine games on the schedule. The puck drops in Guelph, Hamilton, Kingston, London, Mississauga, Ottawa, Oshawa, Peterborough and Sarnia. Family Day has quickly become one of the most popular days on the OHL schedule.
Mar. 18, 2018 – Final day of the 2017-18 season:
The last day of the season usually brings some intrigue as playoff races go down to the wire across the league. Five interconference matchups are on the schedule with Kingston visiting Mississauga, North Bay in Ottawa, Saginaw at Windsor, London visiting Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury at Oshawa.
