Storm vets in action at NHL Rookie Camps
Twelve Storm veterans continue to see action at NHL rookie camps this weekend.
In Anaheim, the LA Kings rookies including Justin Auger (pictured) and Zac Leslie rolled over the Anaheim Ducks prospects with Ryan Horvat in front of 7,500 fans at the Honda Center by the score of 6-1. The two teams will meet again on Sunday in El Segundo at the Kings’ practice facility.
Also out west, Scott Kosmachuk, a third round pick of Winnipeg in 2012, and the Jets dropped the Edmonton Oilers 7-2. The Storm winger scored twice in the win and also netted a goal in Winnipeg’s 5-3 win over the San Jose Sharks prospects on Friday.
Closer to home in London, Ontario, Matt Finn and Garret Sparks, along with their Toronto Maple Leafs teammates improved to 2-0 in the four-team prospect tournament with a 4-3 shootout win over the Pittsburgh Penguins prospects. Sparks didn’t play in the game after picking up the shootout win earlier in the week. Finn, the Storm’s two-time captain, left Saturday’s game with a reported shoulder stinger and his status for Sunday’s game versus the Ottawa Senators is in doubt.
Playing for the Senators against the Leafs will be Storm blueliner Ben Harpur. A fourth round pick of Ottawa this summer, Harpur is part of Senators’ rookie camp lineup. Like the Leafs, the Senators are also 2-0 through two games.
In Traverse City, the Detroit Red Wings are hosting an eight team tournament that features five different Storm players. The Red Wings, including 2nd round pick Tyler Bertuzzi are 2-0. Bertuzzi has been held off the scoresheet but has picked up 7 penalty minutes and 3 shots on goal. The Carolina Hurricanes meanwhile have three Storm veterans in their lineup. ‘Canes 2nd round pick Brock McGinn scored a goal in his only game, while free agent invitees Hunter Garlent and Zack Mitchell have 2 points (1/1) and 1 point (1 goal) respecitively in Carolina’s two contests. The other Storm representative at the event is Jason Dickinson, a first round pick of the Dallas Stars this summer. Dickinson has dressed in one of two Stars’ games so far and didn’t pick up a point during his debut in a Dallas uniform.
