RECAP: Sea Dogs wrap up road trip with shutout loss to Islanders
CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – The Saint John Sea Dogs finished their eight-game road trip with a match against the Charlottetown Islanders at the Eastlink Centre, falling 2-0. Despite a terrific performance by goaltender Justin Robinson, who turned away 42 shots, the Sea Dogs were held scoreless.
The first period set the stage for a defensive game, with both teams highlighting solid goaltending and neither being able to score. The Sea Dogs and Islanders fired seven and 13 shots, respectively, but the period ended deadlocked at zero.
The second period brought penalties into the mix, with Sea Dogs forward Nico Laforge called for a two-minute tripping minor. Alexis Michaud for the Islanders broke the deadlock at 8:16 on the powerplay to give Charlottetown a 1-0 lead. Matthew Butler followed up at 15:35 with the insurance goal leaving the Sea Dogs down by two. Shots on goal by the end of the second tallied 13 for Saint John and 29 for Charlottetown.
Efforts to get something going in the third were stifled despite the Islanders facing a too-many-men penalty at 2:20. Both teams traded shots, with the period seeing 25 attempts in total, but the goaltenders stood tall, preserving the Islanders 2-0 victory. The final shot clock was 23 for the Sea Dogs and 44 for the Islanders.
With their lengthy eight-game road swing in the rear view mirror, the Sea Dogs return home to TD Station next week for the One for All Festival presented by TD with three games in five days starting on Thursday, February 15th against the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada.
