Rockets Score Late Comeback Win in Brandon
Dec. 12, 2013 – Brandon, MB
The Kelowna Rockets defeated the Brandon Wheat Kings 6-5 in overtime on Friday night in Brandon, scoring twice in the game’s final minute and then winning the game in overtime to claim its ninth straight victory.
Myles Bell scored the overtime winner as well as the game-tying goal with just nine seconds remaining in regulation, tying the game 5-5 and sending it to overtime.
The Rockets were down 5-3 in the final minute of the third but Bell and Ryan Olsen both scored with Rockets starter Jackson Whistle on the bench for the extra attacker.
“It was amazing, obviously we didn’t give up tonight,” said Rockets assistant coach Dan Lambert on the AM1150 post game show. “The fact that we didn’t give up tells us a lot about our team’s character.”
Bell added an assist while Zach Franko also had a goal and two helpers to lead the offense. Tyson Baillie also had a three point night with three assists.
Rourke Chartier and Kris Schmidli also scored for the Rockets who outshot Brandon 33-31 on the night.
Jackson Whistle earned the win in net for the Rockets.
Kelowna has now won nine straight overall and 18 of its past 19 games to improve to 25-3-0-2 on the season. It’s the second time the team has recorded a nine game winning streak this season and the Rockets have also won 10 straight road games.
The Rockets are back in action Saturday night when they travel to Regina before playing Sunday in Prince Albert and Tuesday in Saskatoon to close out the team’s pre-Christmas schedule.
“We’re on a bit of a streak here and everybody is gunning to stop us,” said Lambert. “It’s going to be a tough night on Saturday. There are no easy nights in this league and Saturday will be no different.”
Kelowna will return to home ice on Dec. 27 against Kamloops
