Mississauga, ON – The Kootenay Ice advanced to the semi-final game of the 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup with a 7-3 victory over the Owen Sound Attack in a tiebreaker game on Thursday night in Mississauga, ON.
Cody Eakin and Matt Fraser each scored two goals and an assist for the Ice, who trailed the contest 2-0 after the opening period of play but responded with three in the second period and four in the third en route to the victory.
Joe Antilla and Max Reinhart each tallied a goal and an assist and rookie Erik Benoit also scored for Kootenay, who will face the tournament host Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors in the semi-final game on Friday night.
Nathan Lieuwen turned aside 28 of 31 shots he faced to backstop the Ice to their second straight win. The Ice dropped their first two round robin games, including a 5-0 loss to Owen Sound, before defeating the Saint John Sea Dogs in overtime on Tuesday to force a tiebreaker.
Cameron Brace, Jarrod Maidens and Mike Halmo scored for the Attack, who are eliminated from the tournament with the loss.
Scott Stajcer and Jordan Binnington combined for 28 saves for Owen Sound.
The Ice and Majors will face off in the semi-final on Friday night (5:00pm MST; Rogers Sportsnet). The winner will go on to face the QMJHL Champion Saint John Sea Dogs in the 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup final on Sunday.
