Leon Draisaitl Mural
Another former star of the Kelowna Rockets was added to the Rockets Wall of Recognition for Outstanding Achievement.
Leon Draisaitl was added to the wall over the summer by the Rockets mural artist Joey Tramer.
The former Western League superstar’s plaque below his mural explains why Draisaitl belongs on the wall. The plaque reads: “Leon joined the Rockets for a Championship run, recording 53 points in 32 regular season games before adding 28 points in 19 playoff games en route to capturing the WHL Championship and WHL Finals MVP before pushing the Rockets to their 5th Memorial Cup appearance. Leon was awarded the Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy as the Memorial Cup MVP.”
Rockets President and GM Bruce Hamilton always appreciates players going up on the wall.
“Leon meets the criteria because he won an award at the Memorial Cup (MVP),” Hamilton said. “It was great to get another player of that quality up on the wall and he joins a pretty esteemed group.”
The criteria Hamilton is referring to is: To be added to the wall a player must have accomplished one or more of these feats – Awarded MVP of the Memorial Cup / Been Captain of a Memorial Cup winning team / Won a World Junior gold meal / Won a World Championship gold medal and/or Won an Olympic gold medal.
Draisaitl becomes the 18th player to be added to the wall of recognition.
The next opportunity to check out the new mural is on Friday night, September 22nd, when the Rockets open up the 2017-2018 regular season at home against the Kamloops Blazers for the first half of a home-and-home weekend. Puck drop is at 7:05pm at Prospera Place.
