Steelheads acquire overage forward Dean Loukus
The Mississauga Steelheads acquired overage winger Dean Loukus from the Saginaw Spirit on Friday, sending Kitchener’s sixth-round pick in 2024 and a ninth-round pick in 2027 back to the Spirit in exchange.
A 20-year-old from Calumet, Mich., Loukus scored in his final game as a member of the Spirit on Thursday in Kitchener, giving him nine goals, 17 assists and 26 points in 34 games this season. Originally a 15th round (301st overall) pick by the Spirit back in 2019, Loukus produced 48 goals, 85 assists and 133 points over 163 regular season games with Saginaw. Prior to joining the Sprit, Loukus received the USHS Michigan Mr. Hockey award as the state’s top high school player.
“Today is very difficult,” said Spirit general manager Dave Drinkill. “Dean has been a core piece of this team for many years now. His attitude, work ethic, and leadership abilities made him a standout young man in our group.
“It has been a joy to watch Dean develop from a young high school hockey player into an OHL veteran in his home state. Challenging as it may be, we believe this move can open us up to improve our team as we head into the postseason.”
Loukus joins a Steelheads team with a 19-13-2-0 record for second place in the Central Division. Mississauga visits the Kingston Frontenacs on Friday night before returning home to host the London Knights on Saturday.
We want to thank Dean for the time he spent in Saginaw. His dedication, leadership, and passion for the team have left an indelible mark on the players and the entire organization.
We look forward to watching his continued success in Mississauga. pic.twitter.com/LmFq0VvY4X
