OHL Remembers Barry Cullen
The Ontario Hockey League is saddened by news of the recent passing of former Memorial Cup champion and NHL forward Barry Cullen, who died on December 16th in Guelph, Ont. at the age of 87.
Part of a prominent hockey family, Cullen hoisted the Memorial Cup as a member of the St. Catharines Teepees with older brother Brian in 1954. He’d return a year later and record 87 points (45-42–87) in 49 games for the Teepees before graduating to play 219 career NHL contests between Toronto and Detroit from 1955-60. Cullen rounded-out his pro career with the AHL’s Buffalo Bisons from 1960-64.
Like Barry, older brother Brian would enjoy time in the NHL, appearing in 326 career contests while younger brother Ray Cullen a prominent scorer for the Teepees from 1958-62, played in 313 career NHL matchups. Barry’s son, John Cullen, played 621 career NHL games from 1988-99 while more recently, his grandson Matt Cullen enjoyed a lengthy NHL career that included three Stanley Cup titles, and another grandson in Logan Morrison is the current captain of the Hamilton Bulldogs.
In 1969, Cullen bought a General Motors dealership in Guelph, where it still operates as Barry Cullen Chevrolet at 905 Woodlawn Rd. W in the Guelph Auto Mall.
Cullen’s first wife, Loretta Keating, passed away in 1983. He leaves behind the second love of his life, Judy Taylor, as well as several children, granchildren and great grandchildren.
