OHL Mourns the Loss of Garrett Burnett
The Ontario Hockey League is saddened by news of the loss of former Soo Greyhounds and Kitchener Rangers player Garrett Burnett who passed away this week at the age of 46.
A native of Coquitlam, BC, Burnett played 36 games between the Greyhounds and Rangers during the 1994-95 season, suiting up in an additional three playoff contests with Kitchener. Standing in at 6-foot-3 and 220Ibs. in his OHL days, Burnett played both defence and the wing, making the Greyhounds as a 19-year-old free agent invite to training camp.
He’d go on to play 12 years professionally, appearing in 39 games with the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks during the 2003-04 campaign. He scored his lone career NHL goal on fellow OHL alumnus Brett Johnson of the Phoenix Coyotes on March 17, 2004.
Also an accomplished lacrosse player, Burnett was known for his physical brand of hockey and was no stranger to the penalty box. He appeared in 207 career American Hockey League contests and retired from the game in 2006-07 following an injury sustained through an off-ice incident.
The League extends thoughts and condolences to Burnett’s family and friends.
