17 OHL players competing at 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge
Seventeen OHL players are hitting the ice this week on Prince Edward Island for the 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, competing for world supremacy in the annual event that features a total of six participating teams. Fans can watch every game of the tournament live at hockeycanada.ca.
Canada White will face the United States for gold on Saturday at 4:00pm ET in Charlottetown, PEI.
Here’s a look at which OHL players are competing for what Canadian team, along with results and schedules for each Canadian squad:

Nov. 2nd – Canada Red 3 vs. Finland 2 – SO
Canada Red outshot Finland 35-26. Gavin McKenna (Medicine Hat Tigers) scored twice in regulation before converting in the shootout to secure the win. Stats
Nov. 3rd – Canada Red 4 vs. Canada White 3
Ryan Brown (Sarnia Sting) and Luca Romano (Kitchener Rangers) scored third period goals as Canada Red overcame Canada White by a score of 4-3 in Summerside. Canada Red was the more disciplined of the two teams, going 2-for-8 on the power play while Canada White was 0-for-2. Carson Cameron (Peterborough Petes) and Ethan Czata (Niagara IceDogs) collected assists for Team White in the loss while goaltender Jack Ivankovic made 23 saves. Canada Red improves to 2-0 while Canada White has lost its first two games. Stats
Nov. 4th – Czechia 4 vs. Canada Red 0
Ondrej Stebetak stopped all 32 shots that came his way as Canada Red suffered its first loss of the tournament. Isaac Gravelle (Oshawa Generals) made 17 saves in the loss. Stats
Nov. 6th – Sweden 8 vs. Canada Red 5
Sweden stormed out to five first period goals, taking control of the game enroute to an 8-5 victory in Charlottetown. Ryan Roobroeck (Niagara IceDogs) scored for Canada Red while Brady Martin (Soo Greyhounds) and Jake O’Brien (Brantford Bulldogs) both recorded assists. Isaac Gravelle (Oshawa Generals) entered the game in relief, stopping 18 of 21 shots that came his way. Canada Red owns a 2-2 record heading into Tuesday’s round robin finale against the United States. Stats
Nov. 7th – Canada Red 4 vs. United States 3 – OT
Brady Martin (Soo Greyhounds) and Ryan Roobroeck (Niagara IceDogs) scored goals as Canada Red finished the round robin with a 4-3 overtime victory over the United States, courtesy a Gavin McKenna (Medicine Hat Tigers) deciding goal. Isaac Gravelle (Oshawa Generals) made 24 saves for the win as Canada Red closed out preliminary play with a record of 3-2, with two of those wins coming beyond regulation. London Knights prospect Will Moore scored for the Americans, who own a record of 3-2, with both of their losses coming beyond regulation. Moore leads the tournament with 11 points. The United States gets a bye to Friday’s semi-final while Canada Red will face Canada White in quarter-final play on Thursday. Stats
Nov. 9th – Canada White 3 vs. Canada Red 2 – OT
Two closely matched Canadian teams required overtime to determined their quarter-final outcome in Charlottetown on Thursday, with Chicoutimi Sagueneens forward Emile Guite scoring the difference maker to push Canada White into the semi-finals. Matthew Schaefer (Erie Otters) picked up an assist on the game-winner while Peterborough Petes prospect Lev Katzin also scored in the winning cause. Jack Ivankovic earned Player of the Game honours, backstopping Canada White to victory with 31 saves. Brady Martin (Soo Greyhounds) scored in the loss for Canada Red. Canada White will now face Sweden in semi-final action on Friday at 6:00pm ET while Canada Red takes on Finland in the fifth-place game at 12:00pm ET. Stats
Nov. 10th – Canada Red 5 vs. Finland 4
Canada Red secured fifth place at the 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, defeating Finland 5-4 on an overtime winner by Chicoutimi Sagueneens forward Nathan Lecompte. Ryan Roobroeck (Niagara IceDogs) joined Ryan Brown (Sarnia Sting) with a goal and an assist in the win while Luca Romano (Kitchener Rangers) recorded a helper. Isaac Gravelle (Oshawa Generals) made 31 saves for the win. Stats

Jack Nesbitt (Windsor Spitfires) scored a goal while Cameron Reid (Kitchener Rangers), Ethan Czata (Niagara IceDogs) and Owen Griffin (Oshawa Generals) all recorded assists as Canada White let a 3-1 lead slip away, ultimately losing in a shootout. Jack Ivankovic (Mississauga Steelheads) stopped 31 of 34 before turning away five of seven Czech shootout attempts in the loss. Stats
Nov. 3rd – Canada Red 4 vs. Canada White 3

Nov. 6th – Canada White 4 vs. United States 3 – SO
Canada White overcame a 3-1 deficit as Tyler Hopkins (Kingston Frontenacs) picked up a pair of assists in a comeback victory, with Alex Huang (Chicoutimi Sagueneens) netting the deciding marker. Jack Ivankovic (Mississauga Steelheads) started the game and stopped 21 of 24 shots while blueliner Matthew Schaefer (Erie Otters) notched an assist. Canada White improves to 2-1-1 in the tournament, with both of their wins coming beyond regulation. It marks USA’s first loss of the tournament. Stats
Nov. 7th – Finland 5 vs. Canada White 3
Matthew Schaefer (Erie Otters) scored a second period goal with an assist from Tyler Hopkins (Kingston Frontenacs), but Canada White fell short against Finland in Summerside to wrap-up the preliminary round with a record of 2-3 at the bottom of the standings, with two wins coming beyond regulation. Jack Ivankovic (Mississauga Steelheads) made 27 saves in the loss. Canada White will face Canada Red in Thursday’s quarter-final play while Finland has a date with Czechia.

After requiring overtime to defeat Sweden in their previous meeting, things weren’t as challenging for Canada White in a semi-final encounter. Owen Griffin (Oshawa Generals) had a goal and an assist as Canada White advanced to to play for gold, defeating Sweden 6-1 in Summerside, PEI. Tyler Hopkins (Kingston Frontenacs) and Matthew Schaefer (Erie Otters) both earned assists while Jack Ivankovic was outstanding, making 37 saves in the win. Canada White looks to bring Canada its first gold at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge since 2015 against the United States on Saturday at 4:00pm ET in Charlottetown, PEI. Stats
Nov. 11th – Canada White 2 vs. United States 1 – OT
Vancouver Giants forward Cameron Schmidt scored 9:18 into overtime as Canada White is golden at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, defeating the United States by a score of 2-1 in Charlottetown, PEI. Jack Ivankovic (Mississauga Steelheads) was brilliant, making 34 saves to backstop Canada to its first World Under-17 Hockey Challenge gold medal finish since 2015. Ivankovic would join Canada White teammate Matthew Schaefer (Erie Otters) in being named to the tournament all-star team. Ethan Czata picked up an assist on Canada’s goal just 1:38 into the first period. A total of 10 OHL players return home as gold medalists in addition to head coach John Dean (Soo Greyhounds). Stats
