Game Recap: KGN (4) vs BAR (2)
The Kingston Frontenacs looked to defend home turf on Friday night as they took on the visiting Barrie Colts for the first time this season. Looking to bounce back from a loss, the Fronts also looked to honour their legendary radio play-by-play announcer Jim Gilchrist, as “Cookie” hit his 3,000th OHL broadcast.
The opening frame did not get off to the way the Frontenacs wanted, as the ‘other’ Frasca (Jacob, 4) found the back of the net early for the Colts. Kingston would respond with a nifty two on one break, as Ethan Miedema found Chris Thibodeau (6) in front of the Barrie net and made no mistake to tie the game at one a piece. Ethan Miedema collected his 100th OHL point on the play, and newly acquired Jakub Chromiak collected the secondary assist on the play; his first in the black and gold.
Before the first period came to a close, Paul Ludwinski (5) collected the rebound off a Matthew Soto shot and beat Colts’ goaltender Sam Hillebrandt under his right shoulder to give the Fronts a 2-1 lead heading into the second period.
A pretty even middle frame saw a highly contested battle in both creases, with both Hillebrandt and Mason Vaccari coming up with key saves. Just past the midway point of the period though, Ethan Miedema (5) would score on a Cintas Corp. powerplay to give the black and gold a two goal lead. Barrie would be quick to respond, as Zach Wigle (4) tipped home a shot from the blueline that would find its way by Vaccari to make it a 3-2 game before the second period would come to a close.
The Barrie Colts came out of their locker room hungry to tie the game, but Mason Vaccari and the Frontenacs defensive core stood strong; making a flurry of saves and blocking shots to preserve the 3-2 lead. Barrie kept pushing into the dying minutes of the game, but Quinton Burns (1) found the empty net to seal the victory for Kingston; 4-2 being your final score.
It was a night of milestones at Leon’s Centre on this night as Jim Gilchrist called his 3,000th OHL game; while Ethan Miedema picked up his 100th OHL point, Jakub Chromiak collected his 1st point in the black and gold since being acquired earlier in the week by Kingston, and Nathan Poole skated in his 100th OHL game.
